Jean Coutu turned to Chagall to transform its iconic Sainte-Catherine Street location in Montreal into a modern and elegant pharmacy while respecting its rich architectural heritage. This ambitious project, recognized with a design award, has created a harmonious and functional space that offers customers an exceptional shopping experience.
Meeting the Challenge of Unifying and Modernizing
The main challenge of this project was to merge two distinct premises into a single coherent space, while preserving the architectural elements of a former bank. It was also necessary to reconcile the needs of a beauty boutique on the first floor and a traditional pharmacy on the second floor, while respecting space and accessibility constraints.
A Harmonious Design that Highlights History and Modernity
To meet this challenge, Chagall developed a design concept that highlighted the architectural elements of the former bank while creating a modern and functional space. The original moldings and columns were restored and integrated into the new design, giving the pharmacy a unique and timeless character.
An Exceptional Customer Experience on Each Floor
The beauty boutique on the first floor offers a chic and modern environment, with custom displays. The prescription area on the second floor is bright and spacious, with ergonomic counters and clear signage to facilitate customer navigation. Custom signage elements were designed for each section of the pharmacy, contributing to the smooth and enjoyable customer experience.
The main entrance has been redesigned to create a welcoming and inviting experience, with a play of light that evokes drops of water, a symbol of health and well-being. Quality materials were used to create an elegant and refined atmosphere.

The Jean Coutu Sainte-Catherine pharmacy transformation project has been recognized with a prestigious design award, for the International Property Awards competition, highlighting the excellence of Chagall's work and its ability to create unique and memorable commercial spaces.
